Stalingrad--1993 War Movie
Posted on: 7/9/2017 12:18:06 PM
This film is one of the historically most accurate war films ever made in that it displays the reality of soldiers in a battle situation as well as the particular circumstances of the Battle of Stalingrad, obvious when one compares this film to works such as Anthony Beevor's book "Stalingrad".

Unlike the better known "Enemy at the Gates" where the plot diverts into a sniper/hunting story, this film shows what war can do to individuals. Although filmed by Germans, "Stalingrad" is anything but a nationalistic apologetic film. It shows that war films can be something beyond flag-waving, jingoistic distortions of the grim truth of war, like so many Hollywood "war" products seem to be.

The scripting, acting, direction and other film techniques in "Stalingrad" are of the highest calibre.

It's a must-see film for anyone contemplating to join an army and to obey orders from any type of "Fuhrer"

Jim

Huge thumbs up here. Love this movie.
Great story line and a very sad ending, poor Fritz and Leut Witzland.
This beats Enemy at the Gates hands down!!

"Enemy at the Gates" -- the Movie -- was a bit slow although it gave an interesting picture of what it was like to be in Stalingrad. It was based on a couple of pages from "Enemy at the Gates" by William Craig. That book is one of the best I've ever read and I recommend it highly.

Excellent movie. The ending is very good at conveying the absolute despair of what the war in Russia was like for so many.

The Red October, Barricades and Tractor Factory. It took a few more days for them to prepare for the most savage offensive of all, which was unleashed on 14 October with a concentration of fire never seen before. Exceptionally intense shelling and bombing paved the way for
Fighting in the Industrial Area
the German assault groups. The main attack (14th Panzer and 305th Infantry Divisions) came towards the Tractor Factory, while another attack led by 24th Panzer Division hit south of the giant plant.

The German onslaught crushed the 37th Guards Rifle Division and in the afternoon the forward assault group reached the Tractor Factory then the Volga River, splitting the 62nd Amry in two.

The fighting raged inside the Barricades until the end of October.[61] The Soviet-controlled area shrunk down to a few strips of land along the Volga, and in November the fighting concentrated around what Soviet newspapers called "Lyudnikov's Island", a patch of ground behind the Barricades Factory where the remnants of Colonel Ivan Lyudnikov's 138th Division resisted all assaults and became a symbol of the stout defense of Stalingrad.[

By the same people who made "Das Boot". Bound to be good. Saw it quite a few times. My wife´s grandfather fell at Stalingrad.

Some olds movies set mostly in Germany are 'A time to love and a time to die 1958 and Decision before dawn 1951.

Both movies show the situation of the German home front from differing perspectives of the characters involved.
I think both are on you-tube.
