Grant by Ron Chernow
Posted on: 11/4/2017 3:33:30 PM
Has anyone picked this up yet? I believe this dropped 3-4 weeks ago, I'm just getting around to reading reviews.

Chernow is a first rate biographer. Washington: A life, Alexander Hamilton (the inspiration for Lin Manuel-MIranda's brilliant musical), Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., The House of Morgan.

The NY Times review gushes "the biography strongly argues against conventional wisdom that Grant was an adequate president, a dull companion and a roaring drunk."

Looking forward to diving into this.

In brief, perhaps the best biography I've ever read (better even that his Rockefeller bio), and I'm only up to Cold Harbor.
If you haven't use this weekend's 20% off coupon and Barnes & Noble, go now.

How extensive are his notes/bibliography? Does he offer conclusive cites for his assertions?

Regards,

And how much of his book is a synthesis of the past twenty or thirty years of scholarship (without giving credit where credit is due)?

I haven't read it yet, but I got a very hearty thumbs up from an amateur historian that I encountered yesterday at a book store (yes, they still exist). We got talking about the arm full of biographies and histories he was buying. As we were both leaving, we passed a display with Chernow's Grant. He pointed it out and said, "THAT is a great biography -- one of the best biographies I've read and the first one I've read that paints a complete picture of Grant."
