2017--The Centenary Year of the Russian Revolution
Posted on: 3/23/2017 11:11:29 AM
The year 1917 featured two revolutions: the February revolution (actually in March, according to the modern calendar) deposed Tsar Nicholas II after more than 300 years of rule by the Romanov dynasty, ushering in a brief period in which hopes for a democratic future flourished.

Lenin’s Bolsheviks, a small, marginal faction of fanatics who were not taken seriously in the aftermath of the February uprising, took control in the October revolution (actually in November)

The Russians are struggling with how best to deal with this momentous centennial, aren't they ?

It was all up for grabs in the turmoil of 1917....Lenin was a wizard of opportunism.

It's almost painful to contemplate how Kerensky might have turned things the other way.

But since when did "might have " butter any parsnips ?

The Tsarist regime-a Divine Right Rule- was rotten to the core; and the "juggernaut" that was the Russian Revolution- would exact a terrible retribution on the Romanov's- as a family.Shot dead in cold blood

Jim,

I can't agree. The Bolshevik leadership was paranoid to the point of mild insanity. They would have "exacted terrible retribution" on any competing source of power in their quest to become the sole authority. The Romanovs were hardly enlightened leaders, but their behavior was IMO of little consequence to the Bolsheviks.

The same paranoia led to further murderous acts such as the Holomodor, the purge of the Red Army leadership, and the many crimes committed by Soviet authorities against Poland's leadership, the murders in the Katyn Forest being among the more notable outrages. In the early days of Soviet communism, those kind of bloodbaths were a Bolshevik signature.

Cheers

So Bill-was it was an unholy desire by the Bolsheviks to wreak revenge on just about anyone or group- who were seen as blocking "their path" or averse to their determined change of regime ???The Romanov's were the first "Notables"to be done away with

Communism and Russia are amazing in how quickly they came to power in 2017, & how quickly they lost power in 1989??

I must say I was shocked when Communism fell so suddenly in 1989?? They were such a Cold War threat to the World,

& next thing you know Communism & the Soviet Union is no more!!

Can anyone explain it??

It became financially impossible to maintain the Soviet Empire.

We cannot say that there was a second Russian revolution that tossed the communists out can we?

That doesn't mean that the movers and shakers disappeared. The oligarchs run the show with their man Putin, former KGB, at the helm.

It was a joke by BW, Jim. I don't think that you were being mocked. Or were you joking yourself?

A riposte....yes, does Putin's Russia make its own riposte to the rather hubristic triumph of the West in the Cold War ?

Putin himself might be a bit ambivalent about the events of 1917.

I wonder how he sees the last Tsar: hero or zero ?

It´s one of those great "Ifs". What if Ludendorff had not allowed the Bolsheviks to return to Russia in the Sealed Train ?

It's a great story...that sealed train !

Subject of a new book, I've heard - one of several brought out to mark the centennial.

The world turns on contingencies, doesn't it ?
