Does anyone know why this unit was called the "Egyptians?"

The nickname was derived from a section of southern Illinois, known as Egypt, where the regiment was organized, although the majority of its troopers came from other sections of the state.

Along the Mississippi you can find Cairo (Illinois), Alexandria (Missouri), and Memphis (Tennessee) all named for Egyptian cities along America's "Nile."
