I will be spending the day in Savannah in late March.

I've never been there, but heard it's a great place to visit for history buffs like me.

Anyone recommend any must see Civil War era sites or other things to do?

Savannah did not see a lot of action during the Civil War. The remnants of the Confederate army departed without engaging in a significant battle as Sherman approached, and the city surrendered to Sherman, who obtained a resupply from the Federal fleet, and rested his army a bit before heading out to do some serious damage in South Carolina. There are several forts that are interesting. You can find all the info in the Visitors' Center. It's a great town to visit - have fun!

Hey littlepowell,

I will be spending a week in the area later this month. Although I was there for a short time decades ago. I only remember it had a cool riverfront downtown area. So I look forward to any advice, and going there myself! I'll report back later?

Thanks for the replies. Dave - Please report back after your trip this month!

Sounds like the visitors center is a great place to start. It's conveniently located right across from my hotel, so that will work out great.

Will definitely be checking out Moon River Brewing Company. I'm a sucker for local brews.

little powell,

It was an awesome trip! We took a narrated trolley tour of the city, then we walked through many of the squares and the river front. Tybee Island was worth a whole day by itself don't miss Fort Pulaski, great tour by the history ranger and a CW weapons demo. We also saw both Lighthouses out there, Cockspur, & Tybee, a great view on the top of Tybee Light. We ate at 2 very good seafood resturants. We also went for a day trip to Charleston, SC., Boone Hall Plantation was excellant, It is very informative on the workings of one of the great area plantations, The row of original slave houses was very impressive, I learned alot, a must see!
Charleston is a beautiful city, with it's beautiful historical mansions, We did a walking tour. We saw the Aircraft Carrier Yorktown and Fort Sumter. The only negative on Charleston is that it was 2+ hours away from our Condo on Hilton Head Island. So when are you going?

We'll be going at the week of March 25th for a couple days. I'll definitely have to do that trolley tour as well as tour the forts. Thanks for the report!

Yeah, isn't Charleston great? I lived there for 3 years. Got to see all of the sites that you mentioned, except for Boone Hall but do plan to go there someday.

Hey little powell,

Don't forget to report back after your trip, I'm always interrested in new perspectives on areas like Savannah? Also we hope to go back there again in the not so distant future?

thanks,
Dave

Hey guys, I know I am late on this. Savannah also has Fort McAllister where I believe a minor clash occured. I lived in Charleston most of my life, well actually Summerville which is above Charleston. I always enjoyed Boon Hall especially attending the annual Civil War Re-enactment.
