Half a day in Fredericksburg military park?
Posted on: 6/2/2010 10:12:52 AM
On my way back from Washington DC later this month, I will pass right through Fredericksburg. Of course I'm going to have to stop there... To be able to get home at a decent time, I'll only have about 4 hours to spend in the area.

So the question is; how much will I be able to get out of it and would it be worth a visit, or just a tease?

I'd really like to see all 4 battlefields, but I know that's not possible in my limited time. I suppose I can do a driving tour of one of the battlefields... Which one do you recommend? Can one do a driving tour and at least get a decent overview in 4 hours?

Focus on Fredericksburg in such a limited time.

There is so much history to experience in that area, it would take a number of visits to take it all in. Salem Church. Wilderness. Chancellorsville. Jackson Shrine @ Guinea Station. Then there is all the Colonial & Rev War sites !

If I may offer another opinion. I would suggest either Spotsylvania or Petersburg. While there is much to be said for walking the Sunken Road at Fredericksburg, the only vistas that you will have are of houses. Jackson's end of the line is a bit better preserved and you can get a feel for where Meade broke Jackson.

Spotslyvania has a good bit of it fairly well preserved. There is a good driving loop and easy access to the stepping off points.

Petersburg is also fairly well preserved. There are good examples of the works that have been restored and good preservation of the original works in many places. It is a well spaced driving tour as well. Both of these sites lend themselves to biking and hiking.

Yeah I thought about the Spotsylvania option as well since I heard it was very well preserved. It would be very cool to see the "mule shoe". Maybe if I have time after walking the Sunken rd, I can head over there and do the driving tour. I do plan to do Petersburg as well someday.. Wish I had an extra day or two to see it all. Thanks borderstates.
