 | | How to find VA Confederate Records? | | Posted on: 1/25/2010 10:23:16 AM | So far I have 2 family members detailed in the war. Both collected pensions so I was able to pull .TIF documents from the pension records, http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/guides/opac/conpenabout.htm
One family member belonged to 1st VA Cavalry co H, who is detailed a bit in Robert J Driver Jr.'s book on 1st VA Cavalry. I still have questions, especially why did this relative have a "Member Forrest Cavalry Corps" badge in his possession? (VA/Tenn connection is unknown).
I'm interested in more online resources for researching 1st VA Cavalry & 36th Infantry.
Thanks, Kevin

Hi, and welcome. You might join footnote. They have wonderful war between the states records on individual confederate soldiers. It's well worth the price.

Accessing footnote only confuses me, it has 2 entries for a John P (peyton) Wilson Cavalry but not the 1st VA Cavalry. And seems to have no records related to the 1st VA Cavalry?
The more I dig the the cloudier it gets.
All help appreciated.

Defines this, but it does puzzle me why other archives seem different.
Part of the problem is the # of John Wilson or even John P Wilson.
All help appreciated.

I'd respectfully recommend that you physically go down to the VA state archives and poke around. You will have a blast and uncover all sorts of things you won't find over the internet.
Federal archives are good too. But the details are in the State archives.
Best of luck.
