Looking for more info on wife's relative
Posted on: 6/24/2010 9:46:09 AM
I was able to find quite a bit from Soldiers and Sailors, but it would be interesting to find out more (I know some of you have better sources than I).

It would be interested to see if he survived the war, or if he was killed, at what battle etc.

Andrew Jackson McCullough
48 Georgia Infantry, Company H
Rank: Private

Does anyone have any other information that can provide? Thanks in advance!

So it's quite possible he saw quite a bit of action being in the 48th for that long. From what I have read the 48th was involved in all of the major battles of the east; Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Appomattox.

It's possible he could have been wounded during the Seven Days since it states Richmond, June of 1862.

Very interesting Larry. Thanks!!

The 48th Georgia's first engagement was a skirmish 6/15/62 near Seven Pines; and they were heavily engaged at Mechanicsville (Ellerson's Mill) on 6/26/62, during the Seven Days Campaign. They were with Roswell Ripley's infantry brigade.

Later the 48th was assigned to Ambrose R. Wright's brigade of Georgians, which distinguished itself in several battles, including Gettysburg on 7/2/63.

There's a regimental history by John Zwemer; and a chapter devoted to the 48th in the 1864 book "Heroes And Martyrs of Georgia". Both books have been published by Butternut And Blue, of Baltimore.

Thanks Greg. I would love to pickup one or both of those books. I checked Amazon and they must be out of print and hard to find because they were over $100! Oh well. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one of them at my library.

Yes,

Both are now out of print. If you get over to Georgia
some time, any good library will have them.

Might want to check ebay periodically.
