The roman army also had a hand in the gladiator fights.

The Romans did certainly have an impressive military machine for a few hundred years, for a lot of the reasons mentioned.

However, they weren't the only ancient army to have impressive training, equipment, and organization. The Assyrians, for instance, were quite impressive.

If you haven't read it, I'd highly recommend, "From Sumer to Rome" by Richard Gabriel. It talks about some of the interesting, impressive aspects of multiple ancient armies. It's a good, relatively short, read.

My most memorable moments of learning Roman history were, when a professor described the Romans discovering the advance of Hannibal Barca through the Alps as "finding piles of elephant turds ... and saying 'uh-oh!' " ... as well as my father's descriptions of the Battle of Cannae, which he had learned about from history education provided by the U.S. Army.

Cheers

I enjoyed learning about Roman history in school because we were able to visit Chester ( Roman name Deva ) and look at the well preserved roman walls.

Only problem is that only precious few elephants made it through the Alps.
