George,

I guess it's not unusual for the USN to have 5, & occasionally 6 Carriers out throughout the Globe!

I had to look it up but it seems that the USN has 11 carrier strike groups. That's a lot of ships when you consider the ships that are there to protect the carrier.

What does CVW mean?

So 7 deployed in the Pacific doesn't seem out there but clearly more than half. I suppose that it is where they are headed and what they will do when they get there that is more important.

cheers,

George

I've steamed with four CBGs in formation back in the early '80s. It was rather crowded for the Pacific.

Given that about 1/4-1/3 of the ships will be in refit, of 11 carriers there would only be 8 in service depending on the refit schedule. Basically having 7 carriers in the Pacific means there is only 1 USN carrier for the rest of the world.

George, CVW is the Carrier Air Wing, I don't think the USN has one CVW per carrier because of the refit requirement, maybe it has 8 or 9.

OK thanks Riain. Hard to keep up with all the acronyms when you aren't in a military service.

No worries, but I don't know where the V comes from but it's everywhere in the USN aviation world; Squadrons are called VF, VA and even Marine sqns are called VMF, VMA etc., aviation projects are called VFX, VFAX etc, they're nuts for it!

Just the designator for a aviation squadron. "A" was already taken. No special meaning to it.
