 | | The original 8th Ohio Infantry monument | | Posted on: 5/27/2010 1:59:48 PM | Does anyone have a copy of or know where I can find the Tipton photograph of the original monument of the 8th Ohio Infantry Regiment (with the soldier atop it) along the Emmitsburg Road?
My regular sources have come up empty, and the NPS doesn't have a photo. The ACHS has a copy, but the fee to allow me to post it on my website is "cost-prohibitive."
Any ideas?

Bill,
I don't have all my files with me right now but during my research on the Ohio Monuments for my tour on the 4th and 8th Ohio at the last MHO muster, I found that Ohio dedicated all their Gettysburg monuments on the same day. I believe it was 1888 or 1889.
The 4th Ohio monument had been completed by then but 8th Ohio monument had not. The unsubstantiated story is that when the 8th Ohio veterans later saw that that their monument was the same as the 4th’s Monument they made took a collection and had the top portion changed to its present structure.
Again, relying on memory, I have seen that pictures that were taken either in the late 1890s or early 1900s show the 8th Ohio monument as it is now. In any event, there was not a long period of time until it was changed. I have not found anything that documents the date it was actually changed.
It would be interesting to know if anyone has heard the same or different story and if so, if it is documented anywhere.
Bob
