Breakfast on the Battlefield photo requests
Posted on: 7/13/2010 8:43:37 PM
I resumed my morning constitutional today of taking my coffee/bagel onto a quiet part of the battlefield to reflect and start my day on a positive note.

Last year one of my mornings led to the MHO Muster pre-dawn program led by Lew Gage on Berdan Avenue.

Any suggestions/requests for my next few mornings? I will post pics each day and we can decide where the pre-dawn tour will be.

No photo ops this morning, very misty and foggy. I was at the VA Memorial and the only worthwhile shot I saw (and missed!) was Phil Lechak leading an early morning Segway tour!

As for me, I am truly looking forward to the Second Annual Breakfast on the Battlefield tour! We just need to be sure that everyone (especially the guy bringing the breakfast) knows the location and how to get there!

Let the list begin!

Thanks for this wonderful idea, Lisa!

Lisa,

On a misty morning several years ago I got some interesting shots of Gen Warren overlooking a mist/fog filled Valley of Death.

Lisa- I'd like to see the field north of the railroad where the 147th NY made its stand. Don't know what crops are growing there this year. Could you take the picture from Wadsworth's statue looking west? That would align with a treeline that once formed the northern boundry of the McPherson farm. It played a part in the fighting on July 1. Many thanks, Chris Marks

That morning was one of the absolute highlights of the muster last fall.

It was a synthesis of a lot of factors...the weather, the menu, the fact that some guyS got lost (not sure the "other guy" is going to be there this fall, so I chose to not pick on him ) and then Lew's amazing recounting of the tale of the repairs to the monument.

Thanks all for an absolutely amazing morning.

Looking forward to this year's event!
Cheers

Let's not quibble over who was driving whom!

Lisa: If you don't mind, could you take a breakfast photo of me somewhere near the intersection of the Emmitsburg & Wheatfield roads? Thanks!

Chris & Alan - I will honor both requests tomorrow & Friday.

Steve - never gonna live that donut run down, are ya?!

Pat - Power's Hill is added to next week's breakfast schedule.

To all - wait till you see the photos I took this AM, will post upon my return home. The steady downpour stopped as I arrived at Spangler's Meadow...however it resumed quite violently once I was out and shooting pics.

Needless to say I got the pictures (and a curious one as well..more on thst tonight!) but took one for the MHO crew courtesy of Mother Nature. I arrived at work looking like I just stepped out of the shower!

Actually Lisa, I don't want to. It's great having fun with all of you, even if I am the butt of the joke.

Who is buying the donuts this year? And where are we going to meet? And what will the "tour" be?

Ok guys here are the photos I took today. Remember that not only had it rained all night long but resumed raining quite hard while I was out taking these. Sorry for the quality. Spangler's Meadow it was this AM!

This first shot shows how much we needed this rain and also how just a night or two of rain created minor flooding.

Some rocks for you enthusiasts!

Spangler's Meadow

More of the Meadow

A close up of freshly cut wood...part of the tree clearing or installation of water lines?

And this last one is the "curious" one I hinted at earlier today. The sneakers and flip flops were simply sitting there on this rock. The rock is not far off the road. All kinds of images flashed through my mind as I pondered the activities here last night!

That's todays' submission, stay tuned for more tomorrow evening. It will be late however, it's my night at ACHS of course!

Enjoy,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa,

A vicarious visit or cyber visit or whatever it's called it always welcome. I like the mood the rain brings. As for those shoes and sandals, no two match. Is it some kind of message?

I had the same thought about the footwear! Maybe Joe is right, these are the shoes Heth was searching for...

Lisa,

Wonderful photos. Sorry you got wet. Interesting about the shoes and sandals...

As for Powers Hill, bring your tick spray with you! I like visiting there, but I do not enjoy the ticks!

Being an "off the beaten path" kinda person, how about Howe Avenue? I'm sure we can keep you busy running around the battlefield for us!

And, if you guys don't stop making such nice comments about Lew's very little prepared Berdan Avenue tour last year, I'll never be able to live with him!

How about the DA stone? My second most favorite place on the battlefield.

And guys, all the positive comments on Berdan Ave. "tour" most graciously received. Don't listen to a word Ginny has to say (I rarely do.).

Tomorrow is the Peach Orchard area for Alan. i will post pics later that I took this morning around the railroad cut for Chris.

Powers Hill will be done from a distance as I am on my way to work when I take these shots and don't want to take any critters along with me. I like Lew's idea of the DA rock, possible for next week and also a very good possibility for our discussion in October.

Hi Ginny & Lew, Jim & Kathy! Glad you all joined in here. Miss all of you!

Tim Smith just gave me an explanation for the picture I took yesterday of the mis-matched shoes!

There is a ghost tour guide who is telling a story about how the ghosts of the barefoot Confederate soldiers are walking the battlefield looking for their footwear!

These were left as offerings for the shoeless ghosts! Tim said he has seen similar displays like this in Devil's Den. He reported it to the Park citing it as an act of littering.

Now you (like me) know the rest of the story!

Lisa, how about the fence line bordering Herbst woods and the open fields behind the 143 PA monument? Just inside the fence line under the trees is one of,if not my favorite, spot on the battlefield. I envy you and your proximity to the battlefield.
