Does that mean we were correct, on not. All I'll leave the Texas women out of it.
Along the no pic line -
a. What was the first bronze statue on the field? b. What was the first equestrian monument? Extra credit if you know the year.
Extra credit can be applied toward a stack of flap jacks with bob.

Steve --Steve F I suppose I was too cryptic. It is o.c. the Highwater Mark Memorial. But otherwise no, not correct.....and wrong in two ways if my photos and my arithmetic are correct.
But then I was a liberal arts major.

Bob, Who isn't correct? What is the correct answer to the cannonball question then?
Here's a side view of one of the stacks:

The number of balls in a stack are: Bottom layer 6 per side = 36 layer with 5 per side = 25 layer with 4 per side = 16 layer with 3 per side = 09 layer with 2 per side = 04 layer with 1 per side = 01 Total = 91
4 stacks = 4 X 91= 364
Number of balls visible is a little tricker
There are 21 balls visible on one side (the north side in the photo) On the opposite side, the south, we don't count the top ball so that's another 20 balls. On the east and west sides we don't count the balls along the diagonal edges since we already counted them with the north and south sides, so that gives us ten more for each of those two sides or an additional 20 balls. 21 + 20 +10 + 10 = 61 balls visible per stack
4 stacks at 61 per stack = 244 visible

91 in each stack for a total of 364 to make the stacks on the monument
61 visible in each stack for a total of 244 visible --Bill N-T
If all 4 stacks were 6x6 at the base, Bill N-T would be right. But they are not all 6x6. Look again.....
If you know Jimmy Rushing's nickname (he used to sing with Count Basie's orchestra) it might help.

The two stacks by the cannons have a base of 5...... SOOOO,
The two larger stacks have 91 apiece, the two by the cannons have 55 apiece for a total of 292 balls to make the stacks
The number of balls visible becomes: 61 X 2 for the two larger stacks on the monument and 41 X 2 for the smaller stacks for a total of 204 balls visible
How's that ?
Bill N-T
PS, Here's a photo showing the two different size stacks (That was a good one Bob)

I jumped in too quickly with the 'next' question.
And thanks for the correction bob. I love all these little details and getting them right.
And Ginny pointed out to me that I asked a trick question and didn't realize it.
Reynolds in the National Cemetery was the first bronze, in 1872, as Ed answered by PM. And Hancock was the first equestrian, in 1896 as Ed also answered. However, as Ginny pointed out to me, Hancock and Meade were dedicated on the same day. Thank you Ginny.
I now respectfully and humbly defer to Bill.

And my digital photos tend to lean towards evidence of wrongdoing. I need to take a day off just to tool around the park like I used to, when I didn't work here.

Note in the cropped version I left a bit of the 11th MS marker on the right edge and the 111th NY on the left edge. Both are clearly visible in the un-cropped photo.
