Yep, that's it. Somewhere I think I have a "cleaner" shot, but at the moment, I cannot find it.

Based on the photo in Gary Adelman's "Little Round Top, A Detailed Tour Guide" of what he identifies as the base of the guard shack I believe it's the right hand section of the base (based on his photo). the shape of what we can see of the bottom edges matches quite well. Ginney, am I correct in understanding that now "they" say this may not be the base of the Guard shack? If not, then just what is it? In any case Your photo and Gary's photo in his booklet appear to be the same object.

Bill,

Good going on the ID. And I agree, if this isn't a guard shack base, what is it?

I can't post for an hour or two so if you want go ahead Bill.

I'll go check Garry's book.

From what Lew and I remember, Tim and Garry have recanted their theory that this was the site of the guard shack. But, what it actually is, we don't know. I was hoping someone would jump in here and tell us. Possibly Michael J. or George Pyle?

That shot was from 2002. I found the other photo taken in 2001 that shows more. I'll send that to Steve to post for me. Sorry for all the confusion on this!

I think Garry himself no longer believes that slab, tin sheeting, and cables to be remnants of the guard shack. What it is then I have no idea ?

Ginny,

Don't worry about the confusion. It all goes to our ovreall knowledge of the park and every aspect of the ongoing history. I love it all. Let's see what we can collectively figure out here, before we post the next trivia question.

What does the shrubbery in the foreground designate?

A shrubbery?

I suppose, Mike, they could be like those daffodils near the old foundations. Rather statuesque, aren't they?

As Mike alluded to; the vegetation in question appears to be a stout variety of foilage, the latin of which is botanically known as the 2nd strain of Shrubbus Delawareus Brookes Brigadius, which is said to thrive defensively versus Andersonicus, Kershawian and Semmesial plagues near moist ridged woodlands and farms adjacent to their cousin strain of Roses?

Hmmm, I know where the photo was taken, but I don't know the significance of the specific location within the larger context of the site. (Despite the latin references).

No activity all day long after the botonists make their case? And quite frankly Don, I have no idea what your clue is about, and I know you know this one. You're the one who pointed it out to me. Hummmm.....

I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm not positive what that monument is in the background! So, I'm not sure I want to assume that Don's "clue" has something to do with the 3rd Corps or not!

That's the back side of the monument. At the time of the photo some items associated with the monument were off being restored.

OK, so I'm going to assume these "clues" have something to do with a LARGE state (not a SMALL one) with the 3rd Corps.

Big help, right?

Thanks, Don!

I'm leaving town at noon, will be gone all weekend. So...

It's a small state, not a large one. It's not Third Corps related.

I was thinking Delaware ("Delaware daises"), But that monument's not near the monument in background of the earlier photo. Since I don't know the history of this particular monument, I'm going to assume that the previous photos are it's original location and it was then moved to it's present location on Cross/De Trobriand Ave.

Thanks Mike,

You always have the great pics!

Yes Bill, that is the base for the original postion of 2 DE before being moved to its line of battle with the others of Brooke's brigade. As the base still exists they can't hay or cut grass around it so it's easy to find by looking for the clump of shrubs in the middle of the field.

Good go.

A clue might be needed at some point, I just don't know how to phrase it to help and yet not give too much of the fun away. Let me know if you need more of a clue. [And at some point Ginny will say something about me being such a Day 2/Longstreet's Major Assault/Peach Orchard/2nd NH guy. And to be honest, I took this picture whilst doing a tour from one book on this general theme (D2 / LMA) - but that won't help too much, as the tour covered a lot of area - some of which was no where near the Peach Orchard (but you've already figured that out...)]

Ed suggests a clue, how to go about it? Here's one I didn't even know - there's some grass, looks to be steps or stones to the right, a big tree in the immediate background - some more further back. The rock itself is very interesting - what's that term for all that light colored stuff on the front, top, right...oooh!

Alan (and Ed),

When I first looked at this yesterday the obvious answer came to mind immdeiately, but then I thought "No, the background doens't look right." I also thought "I'm the kind of guy who would take a photo of the back of that boulder, but why would Alan want that shot?" So my mind has been wondering all over the field frantically seeking another boulder that might vaguely match this one. How our minds can fool us if if we don't use our Sixth sense.

Thanks Alan,

Steve

Steve - Here's the funny part: I wasn't taking a photo of the back of a boulder. I was taking a photo of something interesting to ground me so when I looked at the pictures later I'd know where I was - it was the start of a panorama. Ed pointed out the thing you (& Ed & others) would be most interesting...
