Is this one difficult, or are we just burning out on this thread? It's a cavalry monument if that helps.

Heck, I leave town in three days and won't be able to monitor this thread. I sure hope someone has a guess before then. Randy really won't like escorting me around the Tawney foundations while I badger him about this relief. Someone.... "help me." (Catch 22...you have to be insane to be here so insanity isn't a way out!)

This is really a wonderful relief. It has three.... oops, I can't tell that one.

It's a distraction for me Ed, but for anyone else?

Okay, the helmet looks like a..... dragoon? But there weren't any dragoons present in the AoP at GB (oops... it's not a Reb monument!)

This has to be the most detailed and beautiful cavalry relief on the field, AND it shows three of something that no other monument shows, unless one thinks Hampton's marker on S. Hancock also has these three. Some think so, others think the "third" is just another laurel wreath.

Oppppsss.... a hint?

Come on folks, I leave soon and won't be able to monitor. Only 3 days remaining.... and soon it will be only TWO and I'll be in PENNSYVANIA.

Okay, guys. There are so many clues in Steve's last post that I couldn't resist chiming in. It should be real easy now.

BTW, weather here in GB is just beautiful with another beautiful day on tap for tomorrow. Seminars today were very informative and Chuck's presentation was very relevant to this post. We had a behind the scenes look at the Cyclorama and I can't wait to go back to take photos. A couple more programs tomorrow then back to the grind until next weekend.

Pat

Pausing to carefully consider all the evidence...

That wouldn't be the 2nd PA Cavalry monument, would it Steve?

We have a winner!

Maybe this one doesn't get much exposure due to its location, a little off the beaten path.

The relief is I think the most beautiful on the field.

The unique feature (maybe) is that it shows all three types of leaves - oak, laurel and palm. It's possible Hampton's battery marker on South Hancock also has all three; it's debatable whether the large branch on that one is laurel or palm. A little research is in order.

This one also has the dragoon helmet which, as Kim pointed out, looks like a face. More research. It also has the fasces symbol of the Federal republic that came from the Romans.

All in all very impressive.

Just for fun, I will add that Chuck Teague's program at the seminar this weekend was on the US Provost Marshal at Gettysburg and he brought up the 2nd PA and 6th PA Cavalry units which, among others, served as Provost Guard. It was the 2nd PA Cav that escorted 3000 Gettysburg prisoners to Westminster at the end of July 3rd.

Ed,

For a guy from Long Island NY, your latest photo hits home. I suppose however, at first It is over the heads of some other's here.
A word to the wise, it you're not from NY and you come for a visit, don't let anyone try to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge, you'll be more then the 67th person to fall for that one.

OK Pat, how many clues are there in that paragraph?

It's the First Long Island Volunteers Monument, also known as the 67th NY. The caption below the bronze relief on the monument is "It's Over"

I count Six clues:
"For a guy from 1.Long Island, 2.NY, your latest photo hits home. I suppose however, at 3.first 4.It is over the heads of some other's here.

Ed, it's that unpublished manuscript again. It has a map showing the position of the monument on Culp's Hill, on the west side of Slocum which is where all the reserve regiments erected their memorials. Only the front line units are on the east side. It's just the way GBMA set it up.

Ken,
The obvious answer is that it's a wood post or tree stump - can't tell which without seeing the base - with an old eye bolt in it. But I'm sure you're looking for a more definitive answer than that!

Was it at the entrance to a road that was normally kept closed to the public by means of a chain from another similar post (on the opposite side of said road) hooked to the eye-bolt? OR perhaps it served the same purpose on a regular park road but has since been replaced by he more formidable gates that we now see around the park at certain locations.

As far as location, I can only guess that it's in the vicinity of an area recently cleared, judging by the logs in the background.
