Sumter - It's a neat place to visit, but it's also kind of hard to get a visual of what the fort looked like during the Civil war. Mostly because it was completely reconstructed afterwards. The walls were lowered, and guns were added for WW1 and WW2. It's still a cool place to visit and the museum (although small) is worth the visit alone. Plus you get to ride out to it on a ferry boat.
Ft. Lamar - This is one of my favorite Civil War sites to visit. It's a completely earthen Fort that was located on a peninsula surrounded by water/marshes. It looks today much as it did during the battle (except for trees). The best part is most people don't even know of it existence so every time I have visited, there was not another soul in site. There is a self guided walking tour brochure at the entrance.

Its on private property belonging to a company called Rehau but they are usually pretty good about allowing people to check it out. The walls are still 6-8 feet high (I believe they have some playground equipment inside the fort proper....its been a couple of years since I've been there). The fort actually overlooks Leesburg and is 1/4 to 1/2 mile away from the Potomac River and Edwards Ferry...but due to tree growth and development today, I'm not sure if the river could actually be seen from the fort itself. It was occupied by the Confederates in the beginning of the war and was being used during the Battle of Ball's Bluff.

Revolving displays every six months or so make it a nice visit every so often.
When address the questions because it needs more qualification, earthen forts, field fortification forts that saw engagements on the line, brick and mortar forts?
-Fort Macon saw action and is well preserved in Atlantic Beach, NC. It is a brick and mortar fort.
-Fort Stedman in Petersburg, VA had a battle named after it and is an earthen fort in good condition.
-DC area has numerous forts still intact, as does some of the Richmond area.

I was just there a couple of days ago, and it is a beautiful fort and park. For only $3 you can get a 6 day pass. They have great interpritive rangers, I learned alot about the fort, area, and the famous Civil War battle fought their in April 10-11, 1862. Robt. E. Lee helped design the defenses of the Fort, with a double moat, 15ft thick walls! state of the art for the time defenses. It was thought by Lee to be impregnible! So much so that after reinforcing it further, he abandoned near by Tybee Island to the Union. What Lee couldn't know is that the Union developed new powerful rifled canons that could travel 4-5 miles and destroy even the thickest brick fortifications. During the battle the Union pulverised the walls of the fort, and it's commander Olmstead had to surrender. Effectively shutting off the Confederate Port of Savannah, during the rest of the war! great stuff, visit this great CW Fort, as a bonus you can see the old light house on Cockspur Island and walk the nice trail system!
regards, Dave
