Robert is my great-great uncle. His tombstone states his service with Company A, 4th Alabama but I have not found any evidence supporting this. I have found evidence that he served with the Shorter Guards (90 Day Volunteers) and Company D, 3rd Alabama Cavalry. His brother Charles was commander of Company I, 38th Alabama Infantry. Robert is buried in Camden Cemetery, Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama.

1840-1863. Commander of Co. G until his death at the battle of Chickamauga. He was the father of Capt. Thomas Wilson Billingsley of the 30th Miss. Infantry who died at Stones River, Murfreesboro, TN.

He had been promoted immediately prior to his death at Chickamauga, saying in a letter home (perhaps as a joke with an element of truth to it) that every man who could read and write had been killed, except for him, and that is how he got his promotion.
