Name: John Thomas ColleyRank: Private Company: K
On September 2nd, 1861, at age 24, in Rowan Co, NC, along with his brother Samuel, John enlisted in Company K, 8th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry of the Confederate States of America. He first saw action on February 8, 1862, when Union General Burnside, during his coastal campaign, landed 7,500 men on the southwestern side of Roanoke Island, North Carolina, and attacked the the Confederate forts on the narrow waist of the island. The 3,000 Confederates, under field command of Col HM Shaw, were out maneuvered, driven back, and eventually surrendered. He was paroled at Elizabeth City on February 21, 1862. While on parole, he married Selena. He was exchanged in August, 1862.
John was wounded in the chest at Morris Island, Charleston Harbour, SC, on August 30, 1863 during the fight for Battery Wagner. He was captured by Custer's troops on May 31st, 1864, in the opening days of the battle at Cold Harbor, Va. After being stripped of all possessions, he was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, and from there was transferred to the Union equivalent to the South's Andersonville, the Elmira, NY, POW camp on July 8, 1864. He was paroled from Elmira and sent to James River, Virginia, on March 2, 1865, for exchange. He was admitted to the Hospital in Richmond, Va on March 6, 1865 with 'debilitas' and furloughed for 30 days on March 8, 1865. As poorly he and others from his unit were treated at Elmira during the Winter of 1864-65, their internment saved them from the fate of the others of the 8th during the attempt to re-take Fort Harrison, Va, where the Union defenders were equipped with new, repeating rifles. Of the 175 men left in the Regiment from the original 568, 85% were killed or wounded in this action.
The 8th, in addition to the above, also saw action at Goldsboro, Plymouth, Drewry's Bluff, endured the long Petersburg seige, and at Bentonville in March, 1865. The unit surrendered on April 26, 1865.
