| Name: Obadiah D. Dancy | Rank: Sergeant | Company: A | Obadiah D. Dancy was born 15 Oct 1842 in Wilkes County, NC. He was the son of Abraham J. Dancy & Luncinda Wingler.
He enlisted as private on March 4, 1861. Served in Company A, 1st Calvary Regiment of NC Confederate Army. 'Obe' Dancy made several trips from the front back to North Carolina to obtain horses for the regiment.
Promoted to rank of Sergeant. After the war, Obadiah was a school teacher and farmer and lived in Wilkes & Ashe County until his death. Died March 24, 1922 in Ashe County, NC. Buried at Reddies River Baptist Church in Wilkes County, NC. O.D. Dancy was my 3rd great grandfather through his daughter Laura Annie Dancy (wife of John H. Taylor) of Ashe County, NC.

| Name: William Rufus Lewis | Rank: Private | Company: D | My great granduncle William was born to Christian and Nancy Miller Lewis in 1844 and was from the Meat Camp community outside of Boone, NC. He enlisted on May 11, 1861. His service record indicates he served as orderly to Col. Baker at various times. He made at least three known trips back home to Boone to bring back horses for the company. He was also a bugler. He was wounded at Glen Springs Virginia in August, 1864 and spent nine days at the Moore Hospital in Richmond Va. While back in Boone to get more horses, Stonemans raid came through on March 28, 1865 and he was captured. He was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio POW camp until June 10, 1865 where he took the oath of alliegence and was released. He returned to Boone where he remained until he died in 1890.

| Name: Thomas Fredrick Burnette | Rank: Unknown | Company: G | Thomas F. Burnette enlisted in Co. G Buncombe Rangers. He was shot by a sniper 11 May 1864: Thomas F. Burnett was one of seven brother who answered the call to fight the Northern agressor during the War for Southern Independence 1861-1865. He was a member of Company G, First Cavalry Regiment, North Carolina, Confederate States of America.
As Union General Ulysses Grant and his Army of the Potomac were pressing toward the Confederate capital, he authorized General Phillip Sheridan to conduct a cavalry raid in an effort to reach Richmond. General J.E.B. Stuart and his Confederate cavalrymen met Sheridan and his men in the hard fought battle of Yellow Tavern on May 11, 1864. The Federal forces were driven from the field, but Stuart was killed. It also meant the death of Tom Burnett.
Marcus Lafayette Burnett, the youngest brother of Tom, arrived at Yellow Tavern at ten o'clock the night before the main battle with a horse for Tom. The horse had been purchased by his father, Frederick Thomas Burnett, from Milton Lyda in Buncombe County, N.C. In his reminisces of the war Marcus relates that Tom said, 'Give him and John Lyda and two or three other boys a few days and they would get me a horse from the Yankees.'
Tom was shot by a sniper the next morning. Marcus remembers:
'John Lyda was near him when he fell-they had always stayed close together and had been mess mates for a long time. Lyda ran to him. He had been shot in the breast and the only words he spoke before he died were: 'John, they got me.'
'John Lyda had seen the Yankee who shot Tom. He noticed this Union soldier behind a large tree and saw the smoke from his gun as he withdrew behind the tree and my brother fell. He knew the Yankee was reloading so he got ready for him, and as he partly exposed his body to pick off another Southerner, John shot him dead. It was a close warm day and the Yank had been wiping his brow with a large red silk handferchief which he held in his hand. As he fell backwards, he released the handkerchief which lodged on a small bush. As Lyda passed by to see if he was dead, he picked up the handkerchief and put it in his pocket. It is still in the possession of one of his sisters living in Henderson county.'
Marcus and John got permission from their commanding officer to obtain a coffin for Tom's proper burial. '(T)ogether with several of the fellows who had been with Tom from the first, we buried him in the back yard of the Yellow Tavern.' He was only twenty-one years old.
