Listed as Pvt. in Co. F, 34th Regiment of NC Troops (Floyd Rifles). Bible states that he 'left home' October 10, 1861 and was killed at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Records indicate that he enlisted 17 September 1861 and agrees with Bible as to date and place killed. Also states the following 'The 34th was with General Jackson on his great flank movement at Chancellorsville and was near him when he was shot. After this hard battle the Army of Northern Virginia started towards Gettysburg and the Brigade, now known as Scales, because General Pender had ben promoted, for the first time had to retreat under fire. Scale's Brigade was in the second line of Pickett's Charge, but was repulsed and driven back in disorder, as was every other command engaged in that destructive charge.'
