Name: John Jackson HollandsworthRank: Unknown Company: B
John Jackson Hollandsworth was killed at Leetown, Virginia on August 25, 1864. He is buried at Edge Hill Cemetery in Charlestown, WV. A condolence letter written to my great great grandparents by the Chaplain of Company B, Capt Burton B. Highly reads, Camp 51st VA Regiment, New Market, VA Oct 25, 1864

To Bro Hollandsworth and family

The sad and meloncholly (sic) intelligence of the death of your son, John has some time since been announced which, no doubt cast a gloom of sadness over the feelings of those who have so repeatedly met his honest face and young manly form around the hearthstone of his infancy.

I am not penning these lines to kindle afresh in the memory of a kind Father, a devoted and affectionate Mother, loving sisters, and a young brother, the horrors and hardships of a soldier's life, but to express the high esteem and moral worth which had ever been characteristic of his life.

Truly may we say: None knew him, but to love him. None named him, but to praise'. But his blameless life has been sacrificed upon his bleeding countries altar in defending the institutions of his southern home. But that God who doeth all things well has called him to a sphere of greater usefulness, far from a world of war and rumors of war, and we hope his loss is our eternal gain.

'He fell at his post' whilst facing an invading enemy. And in this sad and heartrending bereavement we tender our most profound sumpathy to the family, pointing them to Him who is able to support and sustain his children even under the most trying scenes of life. And who has prepared for them a home in Heaven.

Orders have just been received to move. In what direction, we know not. But one thing we do know 'we are traveling to the grave'. The end of life's journey will soon arrive, and when we are done with the exciting cares of this short life may we have our lamps trimmed and brightly burning and be safely landed in that world where friends shall meet again, is the humble wish and fervent prayer of your unworthy friend and fellow traveler to eternity.

B.S. Highly

My love to each one of the family and enquiring friends. Also to father's family - Burton

Name: Uriah BeenRank: Private Company: F
Uriah enlisted into the Confederate Army in 1861 and after becoming sick, was replaced by his son, William Jefferson. Microfilm records in the National Archives in Washington D. C. tends to confirm this story might have substance...Jefferson's records do not show an enlistment, but are actually appended on the end of Uriah's records, as if Uriah's service abruptly ended and William Jefferson's suddenly started.

Name: William Jefferson BeenRank: Private Company: F
Joined the Confederate Army at 16. His father, Uriah who had enlisted in 1861, became ill and could no longer serve. It was required by the Army of the Confederacy, that Uriah had to find his own replacement in order to return home. William went to take Uriah's place. This story is lent some credibility from records at the National Archives. They show Uriah enlisted in Wythe County and do not show a discharge. The records then show William appended to Uriah's records. They do not indicate William ever enlisted, just that his record was attached to Uriah's records. William's pension application in 1904 states he entered the service in 1862.

Archie enlisted as a Private on June 28, 1861 in the Army of Northern Virginia. He was in many battles in Virginia, the last Battle of Waynesboro in Feb 1865, his company G no longer existed as a fighting force. They were routed by General George Custers Cavalry, a few escaped to fight again at Petersburg. I have found no evidence of what happened to Archie, but later he was pensioned by The State of Virginia.

Name: Mahlon AndersonRank: Private Company: I
Mahlon was the youngest son of Harvey Columbus Anderson to join the Confederate Army. He is a brother to Churchill, McCoy, Calvin Alexander, Jesse and Noah Anderson. There are records from the United Daughters of the Confederacy showing that Mahlon Anderson served with Co. I, 51st Virginia Regiment as a Private from June 1862 until April 1865. He enlisted when he was only 16 years old. He was living in Virginia at the time the Southern Cross of Honor was bestowed upon him by the Smyth County Chapter in January 1907. The endorsers were Allen Haga and Noah Anderson. The reason he received the medal so many years later was that at the time of the war, there were no materials to make them, so the names were recorded in an Honor Roll for 'reference in all future time'.
