64th Virginia Infantry CSA

Name: Henry Horne (Horn) Rank: Private Company:
Henry, the son of Nicholas and Nancy Virginia Donahue Horne of Coeburn (Guest Station, Va., had, by the time of the war, moved to Pike County, Kentucky where he and his wife, Eliza Johnson, the daughter of Payne and Margaret Bates Johnson, were raising their family. Henry was the minister of the Methodist Church at Dorton, Kentucky. Although his father (Nicholas) and siblings retained the HORNE spelling of the last name, Henry changed the spelling of his last name to HORN...dropping the final 'e'. His eldest son, Francis Marion Horne, added the final 'e' back to his last name although his brothers and sisters left the 'e' off of their last name.

Name: David L. HughesRank: Private Company: G
David enlisted in Company A of the 21st Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army (CSA) on 16 September 1861. He enlisted again on August 13, 1862 and served as a Private in the 64th Regiment, Virginia Mounted Infantry, Company G. David served with his brothers, David, George, John and Tobias and 1st cousin, David Yeary. He deserted on June 30, 1864 and was killed on December 11, 1864. His family claimed he was kidnapped and murdered by ''bushwhackers.'' Both he and his brother, William, died the same day and Lt. Colonel Witcher''s Men likely killed both.

Witcher had gathered a small number of pro-Confederate men about himself, and began to engage in the free-for-all on the Kentucky border. Similar pro-Union paramilitary bands also marauded in the area. Initially neither of the national governments recognized these guerilla bands, and if a man were captured from these units, they were frequently executed because the protection of the Articles of War did not apply to them. To afford their own bushwhackers the protection law, both the Federal and Confederate governments gave their bands official military status. Witcher''s men thus became designated the ''34th Battalion Virginia Calvary, CSA.''

Witcher''s men were initially labeled as ''Independent Scouts.'' The unit eventually became known as ''Witcher’s Boys.'' It was their duty to serve as a counter insurgency force against the local Union units operating in West Virginia, East Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, and Northeast Tennessee. They soon began to distinguish themselves for their barbarity, their specialty being a variation of lynching done with a bent pole that jerked its victim into eternity.

Name: William Jasper CollierRank: Captain Company: I
He is incorrectly identified in the book 64th Virginia Infantry by Jeffrey C. Weaver as being in Lee Co., Virginia in the 1920 Lee Co. Pension list. But that is another William J. Collier that is a distant cousin. Capt. William Jasper Collier moved to Menifee Co., KY in 1868 and appears there in the 1870 census. In 1876 he moves to Cooke Co., Texas and lived there until his death in 1918. He applied and received a Confederate Pension from Texas for his service as a Captain in the 64th Virginia Infantry. He was with Longstreet's Corp at Appomattox at the surrender.

Name: William Jesse ThackerRank: Private Company: I
Enlisted Sept 1 1862 in Lee co. Va.Paroled at Cumberland Gap on May 2 1865.He also served in Company A 94th Virginia Militia. Distinguished Service. William worked in the coal mines before and after the war. He is my GG Grandfather. I was told that he was a mean SOB. I believe his meaness came from being held at the Douglas pow camp in Illinois. Here is a link for information on how our ancestors were treated.
