Name: Luther TurnleyRank: Private Company:
My father's name was Luther Turnley Fraker and my paternal grandmother was Helen Turnley. Luther Turnley enlisted in the 5th Infantry Battalion Virginia, but I understand the 5th merged with the 53rd in 1863. It looks like he also may have been a POW. I am trying to investigate which actions he participated in since the 53rd Infantry was involved in so many critical encounters as part of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Name: Floyd Caswell MoringRank: Private Company: C
Floyd C. Moring was born in 1842 at the Moring home place in Prince Edward County. He was the youngest of Caswell and Emily's nine boys.He enlisted in 'C' Company of the 53rd Virginia Infantry on March 10, 1862 at Spratley Farm. At the time of his enlistment, he was listed as having 'light' hair with a 'light' complexion, and his height was given as 5'11'. He stated his residence as being Rice, Virginia. He was admitted to Farmville Hospital on June 18, 1862 suffering from diarrhea. He was released from the hospital on July 22, 1862, and rejoined his unit. The 53rd Virginia was in the middle of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and Floyd was taken POW after the failed charge. He was first sent to Fort McHenry on July 6, 1863, and then transferred to Fort Delaware between July 7th and 12th. He spent the duration of the hostilities there, and was released on June 20, 1865, after taking the 'oath'. Floyd returned to his home near Rice and resumed a life of farming. He married Emily Nunnally on December 21, 1865 in Nottoway County. They remained on the property near Rice, and Floyd received most of his father Caswell's land upon his death in 1881. This land is what is now known as 'Moran'. Floyd received a Confederate Veteran's pension from the state for serving honorably for the Cause. A Confederate head-stone marks his burial at the old home place in Moran, VA.

Name: Epaphroditus P. GilliamRank: Private Company: E
Not a very stellar history for my Great-Great Grandfather. Records show he enlisted on 26 Feb 1863 at age 18. He later told Union authorities he was conscripted in 1862. He deserted from Richmond and went home to New Kent on 16 May 1863. After 5 months they came looking for him and he 'fled to Yorktown and gave myself up to the Gun Boats'. That was on or about 5 Oct 1863. He spent the rest of his time as a POW at Ft. McHenry until he took the oath and was released on 10 Sept. 1864. He died in New Kent in 1896 and is buried at Pamunkey Methodist Church. After his death his widow moved the family to Philadelphia. She and 2 of their children are also buried at Pamunkey.

Name: Andrew Broadus AndersonRank: 1st Lieutenant Company: F
Andrew B. enlisted in Edmunds Guards, Company C under Capt. James O. Chappell, Montague's Battalion 7/10/61 at Union Church in Halifax County, VA. He was then elected 1st Sgt. of of the Company.
The 53rd Virginia Volunteer Infantry was formed by the consolidation of Montague's and Tomlin's Battalions with Waddill's Company on Dec. 12 1861. He was elected 2nd Lt. May 5,1862 and promoted to 2nd Senior Lt. on Dec 27 1862. He was promoted to 1st Lt. on Jan 13 1863. Fought in many of the early battles in Virginia before Gettysburg. He was wounded at Gettysburg during Pickett's charge 7/3/63 after crossing the stone wall and somehow made it back to the Confederate lines without being captured.
During his trip back to Richmond maggots got in his wound and probably saved his life.
He was admitted to General Hospital No.9 on July 15, 1863, then on the 16th of July admitted to the C. S. A General Hospital in Danville, VA. From there on July 18th he was sent home to Halifax Courthouse and expected to return in 20 days. He married Sallie E. Wood on Aug 19, 1863, before returning to duty on 27 Aug 1863. He participated in the battles of Chester Station, Drewry’s Bluff, The Siege of Petersburg and Five Forks before the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865.
