| Name: Caswell H. Sturdivant | Rank: Captain | Company: K | In February 25, 1862, Caswell enlisted in Co. K of the NC 43rd Regiment Infantry 'Anson Independents' in Wadesboro, NC. He was a farmer prior to enlisting at age 34. He was appointed 1st Lt. on Feb. 25, 1862, and then promoted to Captain on May 2, 1862. He was present with his unit at the Battle of Gettysburg, PA. A report written by Officers at the end of the war stated that he was 'there for the whole fight'. While acting as the company commander at the 3rd Battle of Winchester he was wounded by an artillery shell and captured on Sept. 19, 1864, where he died of his wounds on or about Sept. 30, 1864. Caswell is buried in the Stonewall Confederate Cemetery on East Boscawen Street in Winchester, Virginia. This is the largest Confederate Cemetery in Virginia.
