Rufus was my Great Grandfather. We know that he was a mining engineer prior to the war and mined for gold in both the Dahlonega area and also in California 1849 Gold rush. We have a coin ($2.50 gold piece) struck in Dahlonega from gold he found there in 1847.

I have a picture of him and a diary he carried in the war but would appreciate any other information that other may have.

Name: John Erwin MartinRank: 3rd Lieutenant Company: G
John Erwin Martin was a CSA Civil War soldier. He is listed in records as Second Lieutenant of Co. G., 52 GA Inf Regt. Also known as the Allegheny Rangers. His unit engaged in many battles, including Vicksburg, MS, Franklin, Resaca, Chattanooga and others. His military record states that he enlisted on 4 Mar 1862 and that he contracted rheumatism in Kentucky Campaign in 1862. He resigned 25 Apr 1864.

Martin, John Erwin-Jr. 2d Lieutenant March 4, 1862. Contracted rheumatism in Kentucky campaign in 1862. Resigned April 25,1864. (Born in Lumpkin County, Ga. August 18, 1829.)

At the end of the siege of Vicksburg, surrender terms negotiated between General's Grant and Pemberton allowed for the parole of the Confederate garrison. The Union forces did not have to contend with prisoners of war. Confederate soldiers signed a parole notice promising not to take up arms against the United States until they were exchanged by the proper authorities. Our John E. Martin was listed as one of the parolees: MARTIN JOHN E 2LT 52ND GA INF G FIELD

John applied for a soldier's pension on 29 Apr 1895. On this application he says that he enlisted the Confederate Army (Company G, 52nd Infantry) in Blairesville, GA in March 1862. He bases his application on the grounds that he is indigent and unable to work. He writes, 'I suffer from rheumatism of shoulders arms and legs am badly troubled with piles and have a bladder trouble that bothers me at all times have been in this condition for ten years' He resigned near Dalton, GA in May 1865.

52nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry

52nd Infantry Regiment was organized at Atlanta, Georgia, in April, 1862. Many of its members were drawn from the counties of Habersham, White, Towns, and Fannin. It took part in the Cumberland Gap operations, then moved to Kentucky and later Mississippi. Here the unit was assigned to General Barton's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and was active in the conflicts at Chickasaw Bayou and Champion's Hill. On July 4, 1863, when Vicksburg fell, it was part of the garrison that was captured. Exchanged and assigned to General Stovall's Brigade, the 52nd fought with the Army of Tennessee from Missionary Ridge to Nashville. Then on February 23, 1865, it was detailed to guard wagon trains from Columbus, Mississippi. During December, 1863, this unit totalled 279 men and 197 arms, had 123 fit for duty in November, 1864, and the few that remained surrendered on May 4, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Wier Boyd and Charles D. Phillips, Lieutenant Colonel Solomon H. Van Diviere, and Majors J.J. Findley and John J. Moore.

My Great, Great, Grandfather came home from the battle of 'Devils Den' with a Yankee bullet in his hip, which wasn't removed until his death in 1927. I have a photo of the actual bullet that was removed from his hip. He walked home from Virginia after the battle. I have photo's of him before and after the Civil War. He named his mountain home located in Fannin County, Georgia after this battle and so it is known as 'The Devil's Den' to this very day. Grandpa said, 'Devils Den was a place he would never forget.'
