He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Major. He had served in the Indian Wars in Georgia and Florida, first as a Captain in 1838, then later as a Major in 1846. (Note: Johnson's son-in-law, Major William M. Hines, also served in the 19th Brigade.)
Johnson moved his family to Freestone Co., Texas in 1854, after originally arriving in Brazos Co., Texas in 1848. Johnson owned a 10,550 acre cotton plantation seven miles west of Fairfield (in Freestone Co.), where he built the 'Rock House,' which is still owned by the family today. |
