D. W. Hammett was the 4th son of James and Clarissa Hammett. He was born at Spartanburg S.C. about 1830 and moved to DeKalb co. Ala. before 1840. He married Nancy Sample in St. Clair co. Nov. 5 1860, and they had 2 sons, Albert F. and W.D. Jr. Enlisting with his brothers Perry and Tilman in Co. B 'Wills Valley Guards' in Apr. 1862. The 48th was sent to Va. and placed in the brigade of Alex. G. Taliaferro, under Stonewall Jackson. They fought at Cedar Run, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg where Daniel was wounded. He died Jan 1 1863, and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. His 2nd son being born only 7 days before his passing. Nancy moved with her kinfolk to Izard co. Ark. about 1872 and raised her boys. She was granted a Confederate Widows Pension from Arkansas in 1901, and died in 1909. Nancy is buried at Flatrock cemetery in Izard county.
