Name: Jesse White FortsonRank: Private Company: F

My great-great grandfather, Jesse White Fortson, born June 18, 1835, enlisted May 10, 1862 at Savannah GA for a period of '3 years or during the war.' He died July 27, 1862 of fever at Staunton, VA and according to family tradition, was buried under an apple tree there by two of his friends, Henry R. Deadwyler and Thomas Thornton. I am pleased to know that his burial site is now a Confederate cemetery. He was married to Sophia Barbara Black (1838 - 1925) on Oct. 2, 1857. She never remarried. She applied for her widow's pension in 1891 and received it until 1907. She is buried at Dove's Creek Baptist Church, Elberton GA. Jesse's dates and burial information are on her tombstone. Their son, Jesse White Fortson, Jr. was born Aug. 26, 1862.
