Name: George Washington KrofftRank: Private Company: E

This company was raised by Captain Hiram A. Messenger, and was mustered into the service of the United States November 29, 1864, at San Francisco. The company was stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco, from the date of organization to the last of March, 1865. It then went to Tubac, Arizona Territory, where it remained until September, 1865; then at Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, until May, 1866, when it was ordered back to the Presidio, San Francisco, for final muster out, which occurred June 28, 1866. George enlisted at Jackson, Amador County, California on 28 October 1864 at the age of 41 years and nine months. His record shows him as mustered into service on 19 November 1864. His record shows him on 'Detached Service, on picket duty at Agua Frio Ranch' from July '65 to February '66. The records also have his name spelled wrong, he also appears as Kroffs and Krofts. After his service, George disappears until 1880 when he is living in his brother's household in Michigan. Eventually, George buys land in Arkansas, where he dies in May, 1889. Anyone with information or access to information about George's time in California, please contact me. I believe he traveled with or stayed with the Finney family in the early to mid 1850's.
