Joel mustered into service 15 Feb 1862 at Conyers, Ga. He was in almost every battle fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. As far as we know he was never wounded. He was only hospitalized for debilitas(the term for battle fatigue in those days). He was with Lee's army in the retreat from Richmond acting as rear guard, but was captured 6 Apr 1865 at Sailor's Creek near Farmville, Va. He had fair complexion,dark hair, grey eyes and was 5ft. 8in. in height. He returned to his devastated farm in Georgia, and later moved his family to Van Zandt Co., Tx. by the late 1870's.
