In 1862, Samuel join the 38th Alabama Inf. from Clarke County, Alabama. His occupation was teamster for which he was paid 25 cents a month. He was captured November 25, 1863 at Missionary Ridge, TN during the Battle of Chattanooga. He was then confined at Rock Island, IL. He was in the first group of prisoner to be sent to Rock Island, Il. On May 03, 1865 Samuel was sent to New Orleans to be released as an exchange prisoner.
