George Washington Gaddy was born in North Carolina in 1827. The 1850 census shows George W. and wife, Emily Ridling Gaddy, in Dekalb County, Georgia. He was a farmer with property valued at $350. Emily, also 23, had been born in Georgia. Although he was the father of five boys (and another was to be born the next June), George W. Gaddy enlisted in the Confederate Army at Camp Kirkpatrick September 26, 1861. His company was successively designated as (Old) Company C and (New) Company A, Wright Legion, Georgia Volunteers, and Company A, 38th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. He was advanced to sergeant and held that rank when he was killed at Sharpsburg, western Maryland, in the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862. His death was from an artillery shell. M226 roll 22 (4th Cousin 3 times removed)
