Name: Benjamin Franklin WagnerRank: Sergeant Company: A

Benjamin Franklin (B.F.) Wagner was a Sergeant held prisoner at Camp Butler in Springfield, Illinois. He and many members of the Regiment were taken prisoner at Island #10 in Missouri on April 7th, 1962. Camp Butler was very unsanitary and 148 Confederate prisoners died there in the first month after over 2,000 prisoners arrived in 1862. Due primarily to cantagious diseases there are 866 Confederate prisoners buried there. Due to overcrowding B.F. Wagner and almost all of the two thousand surviving Confederate prisoners were exchanged in 1863 and re-entered the Confederate army. B.F. Wagner wrote in his pension application that he was a member of the 1st Alabama Regiment of the Infantry, Company A, Quarrels Brigade, Wallthall's Division, Seaward's Chore, Army of Tennessee. Oral family history recounts his fighting at the battle of Atlanta and his long walk home on a crutch to his home in Alabama. B.F. married soon after the war and traveled in a converted war ambulance in a wagon train to Comanche County in Texas. He raised three children with his first wife, Martha Jane Ware, and after her death in 1889, he married Dora I. Owen and raised a second family with eight children. He was a farmer in Comanche County until about 1905 when he moved his family to a ranch in the Panhandle of Texas. He died in Abilene, Texas in 1925. I am one of B.F. Wagner's great grandsons.
