John P. Johnson was born in Putnam County, Georgia in abt 1815. In June 1861, He enlisted at Camp McDonald, Cobb County, Georgia along with two of his sons (James A and William M). From Service Records he was on muster rolls through Feb 1862. In March 1863 he was assigned to serve extra duty as a shoemaker at C.S. Shoe Dept in Richmond. In Jan 1864, he was listed in Jackson Hospital report with typhoid fever. After discharge from hospital in Feb 1864, he returned to service as a shoemaker. In July 1864 he was discharged for 'being over age.'
