Letters from him to his wife show that he was at 'Camp Georgia', FLA., Fort Barrancas at the end of April 1861. Letters later that year put him in Staunton, Virgina at General Hospital in charge of the Apothecary. After a year with the 1st Volunteers he returned to Forsyth, Ga where he served as Post Master. In 1864, the injured were brought to Forsyth via train from the battles around Atlanta. There were hospitals set up in multiple places around town. There was a hospital camp set up in a grove at the Sneed homestead. A historical marker is in place.
