Charles Gardner was born in Ireland and immigrated during the Famine Years with other family members. He had three brothers that also joined the 38th Georgia Infantry Volunteers, and they were sent by the State of Georgia to join the Army of Northern Virginia. They were assigned to Stonewall Jackson''s division. Charles was wounded on June 1, 1864 at the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia. He died of the wounds on June 2, 1864. He had only one son, born in December, 1859 which I and many other Gardner relatives decended from in Dekalb County, Georgia.
