William was known to family and friends as W.J. and enlisted May 15, 1862 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a member of Company N which became the New Company I. From June 10, 1862 to July 28, 1862 William was in a Confederate General Hospital in Petersburg, Va suffering from rubeola. Shortly after returning to service he was wounded in the head by grape shot during the Battle of 2nd Manassas. He was apparentley wounded again during the Battle of Gettysburg. The union army overtook a school used as a hospital in Chambersburg, Pa and as a result he became a prisoner of war. He was transferred to the Provost Marshal at Harrisburg, PA on August 17, 1863, forwarded to Philadelphia on August 18, 1863 and delivered to Fort Delaware Prison on August 19, 1863. He was eventually transferred to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland most likely in the fall of '63. He was present in a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee near Richmond, Va on February 17, 1865. William suffered the rest of his life from epileptic spasms caused by his head wound.
