3rd SGT. Thomas Monroe Gould (1835 - 1902) enlisted in Wilsonville, Shelby, Alabama on 7 OCT 1861. He was mustered into the 29th Alabama Infantry, Company 'E' on its inception in February 1862 in Pensacola, Florida where he remained until Pensacola was evacuated in May 1862. He then moved on with the 29th Alabama Infantry to Camp Lee, Pollard, Alabama and remained there from May 1862 until June 1863. He then moved to Mobile, Alabama where the 29th Alabama remained from July 1863 until April 1864 when it was deployed to Resaca, Georgia to initiate the Atlanta / Dalton Campaign. 3rd SGT. Thomas Monroe Gould fought with the 29th Alabama at the Battles of Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, New Hope Church, Peach Tree Creek and Ezra Church. On 28 JUL 1864 while engaging the forces of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman at the Battle of Ezra Church, 3rd SGT. Thomas Monroe Gould was combat wounded. He was shot in the right leg which was soon amputated above the knee. He was paroled at a Confederate Hospital in Selma, Alabama in June 1865 where he was then still recovering from his injuries. After the War in September 1865 he relocated from Shelby, Alabama to Lake, Scott County, Mississippi where the Majority his descendants reside to this day.
