Name: Thomas Jefferson JamesRank: Private Company: B

Thomas Jefferson James was born in June 1846 in Jones County, Georgia. He enlisted with Co. B, 12th Georgia -- his brothers' unit -- on 3 June 1863, just in time to deploy for the Battle of Gettysburg. He and his brothers William and Abel fought in their units' numerous battles until 10 May 1865 when they were all captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. Their unit, part of Doles' Brigade, were overwhelmed by Upton's charge at the western side of the Mule Shoe. They were taken prisoner and sent to Point Lookout POW Camp, and then Elmira. William died at Elmira and is buried in the cemetery there. According to Thomas' daughter, Annie May Carson, Thomas had attempted an escape by digging out with a spoon. He was recaptured and not released until the end of the war.
