Age 22, he enlisted March 20, 1862 (Huntsville, Walker Co, Texas) as a Private in Company H (Captain Proctor Porter), 4th Infantry Regiment (Texas Volunteers), Hood's Texas Brigade. Co H Muster record for May/June 1862 shows Charles was in the vicinity of Richmond VA. December 27, 1862, he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #5, Richmond VA, with an accidental gunshot wound to a foot. March 11, 1863, Charles was furloughed for 60 days for the injured foot. Co H Muster Roll for July/August 1864 notes C.L. Taylor in Texas since 1862, permanently disabled and transferred to the cavalry. Note: He would not have been in Texas until after March 11, 1863, when he went on furlough. Charles L Taylor and Alexander (Alex) Taylor were brothers in Company H.
