The son of Nicholas Johnson and Nancy Virginia Doahune Horne of Coeburn (Guest Station), Va., Charles enlisted in Company H, Virginia 50th Infantry Regiment on 25 Jul 1862. Mustered out on 12 Oct 1862. (This was a month after his death.) Charles was killed at the Battle (Skirmish) of Gauley Bridge on 3 September 1861. According to his enrollment papers, he stood 5'11' and had a dark complexion with blue eyes. Charles was married to Margaret Elizabeth Jesse, the daughter of David and Martha Stinson Jesse. After Charles' death, she married Hiram Kilgore, the son of Reverend Charles and Mary Gray Kilgore. His brothers, Stephen, Samuel, Henry, John, Thomas Harmon, and Jesse were also Confederate soldiers. Their father, Nicholas Johnson drove a supply wagon for the Confederate Army.
