2nd Tennessee Infantry (USA)
Ancestor Info
Name: Gabriel David Lawson HopeRank: Private Company: A

David was the first out of 3 Hope boys from his family to fight. He was part of the 2nd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry - Company A, along with his brother Andrew Nelson Hope. David, like many of the 2nd Tennessee men, (but ironically not his brother Andrew) was captured on November 6, 1863 in Rogersville, Hawkins, Tennessee. From there David was taken to the notorious Belle Isle Prison and was held at that establishment from mid-November 1863 to late February 1864. After that, he was going to be transferred to the infamous Andersonville Prison, (A place where A LOT of these 2nd Tennessee men would perish) but he would never even see the gates. David was taken as a sick POW in Augusta, GA in March 1864, and died March 10, 1864 when he was 22. He left behind a 1 yr old son and a young wife. The name Gabriel is inferred from the 1850 Hope family census, this was the only time where he was called Gabriel. Most times he is called David or D.L. Hope. This is a very small bio of him, email me if you are interested and I can give A LOT more detail.
