Goodness !

Doesn’t that letter hit home hard ?

Here we have a man who’s suffered hardship, privation and the terror of battle.

What strikes me is the combination of anger, bitterness and fundamental decency : there must have been so many men who felt outrage, perhaps fatalism, and retained their tender feelings and pride in their family honour and the cause that demanded such horrible sacrifice.

We have to salute the enduring commitment of soldiers who felt so conflicted as they underwent the ordeal of that war.

Regards, Phil
