I read somewhere that Jefferson Davis considered pulling the Rebels Army out of Vicksburg to save the troops? In other words give up Vicksburg so his army is intact??

Any truth to that?

Dave,

No I think thats not right. Davis wanted vicksburg defended and held. Johnston avocated saving the army and temporarily evacuating. Davis muddled things by sending johnston to save vicksburg and then contradicting his orders to pembeton contributing to the final defeat by attempting to command from richmond when he had no first hand info of the situation.

thanks mike_c (see Woodworth; Jefferson Davis and His Generals)
