Hi Larry,

Harper’s Ferry always seemed to be switching who held it! How many times was it taken over? Certainly a hard place to defend, considering it was a national arsenal?

Comments?

Most likely whomever picked Harpers Ferry for the site of an arsenal never considered some day having to defend it. A war time General once said of Harpers Ferry, " I would rather attack a hundred times th
an try to defend it once".

I believe it was George Washington that selected Harpers Ferry for the arsenal site.

Washington favored the Harper`s Ferry location because of its isolation and being far inland, thinking about how it would be safe from foreign invasion. He obviously did not consider an internal national conflict from within.

I wonder if the high chances for flooding were ever considered?

Larry,

Many thanks for providing the detailed accounts of Harpers Ferry ! Its one of
my favorite Civil War sites to visit.

My 2x great-grandfather and his brother were there with the 31st Georgia
of Lawton's Brigade, Jackson's army, before moving on to Sharpsburg
where it was engaged in the Miller cornfield.

Best Regards,

Greg
