Hi Larry,

Interesting to note how sober the initial Herald article is : far from hyperbole....most apparent in the first reckoning of what the Union casualty list for the battle might be : a thousand killed and five thousand wounded. This is a big understatement ; the actual loss being double those figures, the official return giving more than two thousand killed outright and close to ten thousand wounded. More remarkable still, it reports that the losses for the two sides were roughly equal. With many articles insisting that the enemy loss was much the greater, this report is conspicuously disciplined and, in the event, pretty accurate in attributing roughly evenly divided slaughter.
