Hi Larry,

Kind of tough being a commanding officer when the press blasts you!? Patterson must of been beside himself if he read this article!? Was it true that he was left wanting??? What say you??

Thanks,
MD

What I know of Patterson says he was the wrong man at the wrong time. I think he was more concerned about not losing than trying to win. I think also he was the type of officer that needed clear direct no nonsense orders. Giving him any discretion was a sure fire path to disaster.

The guy was 69 years old in 1861. He had fought in the War of 1812 and in Mexico. Had been an excellent soldier and commander - 15 years before. Should never have been appointed.
