The robustness of the American press in those days captivates me. It excites my admiration, giving a true feel for the vigorous democratic tradition, yet it might have been better tempered by a discerning moderation. Actually, Larry, don’t you think it might be revealing to compare it with its Franco British counterparts? I wonder, for example , how a major French newspaper ( Le Figaro ? ) might have reported the Battle of Solferino, or the London Times the events of the 1857 uprising in India known as The Indian Mutiny. These events are roughly contemporaneous with the Civil War.
