Hi Larry,
With Baltimore mentioned many times in these articles. Just what is it with Baltimore being such a Pro Reb. Town??
Even Lincoln felt totally unsafe going through Baltimore!? Why??
What say you?.Anyone??

Dave,
John Wilkes Booth came from a township close to Baltimore, didn’t he ?
Says it all .
If my understanding is correct, the Eastern part of Maryland, and, of course, it’s southern regions, were pretty pro confederate, with a significant amount of slaves and some plantations. Maybe tobacco ?
The western part contained small farmers, artisans and shopkeepers, and was more pro union, which the invading rebels discovered to their discomfiture when Lee invaded the state in September’62.
Larry, forgive me being missing in action lately.
I’m keen to pitch in and discuss Antietam.
Regards, Phil

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the quick, yet accurate description of where Maryland's CW alliances lay! You wonder why the Unionists in Baltimore let this Rebel contingent dominate the scene!??
Didn't realize John Wilkes Booth came from the Baltimore area? Never has such a worthless soul negatively affected history!?
Thanks for the astute insight!
Regards, MD
PS glad to have you back!
As far as Antietam & McClellan s part in it go, I think if Grant had gotten Lee's plans, he would have won the day, & possibly the war!? What say you?
