Hi Larry,

You could actually print stories of Harper's Ferry changing hands a dozen times!? Because it actually did change hands 12 times during the Civil War!? Why was it so indefenseable?? Anyone?

Regards,
MD

Harpers Ferry is in the bottom of a bowl. Surrounded by Bolivar, Loudon and Maryland heights. Whoever controls the heights controls Harpers Ferry. Colonel Dixon Miles apparently didn't know that. His defense of Harpers Ferry was that of a drunken amateur. Some historians have concluded that Miles was struck by artillery deliberately fired by his own men, but there is no conclusive proof. The resulting surrender of 12,419 men was the largest number of U.S. soldiers surrendered until the Battle of Bataan in World War II. The court of inquiry into the surrender denounced Miles for "incapacity, amounting to almost imbecility".

Larry.
